When the Chandelier Turned into a Maternity Home!!

Yes, the chandelier in my house has become a maternity home to a pair of red-whiskered bulbuls!!

With flowering plants, papaya, guava and coconuts trees in my garden, I get a couple of chirpy visitors, butterflies, and squirrels on a daily basis. Currently, at least five generations of pigeons have made one of the window lintels their family owned maternity hospital. ☺ Squirrels sometimes enter the family room to catch their favorite National Geographic show on TV. 😊

Now, it is bulbul’s turn. Since birds whizz in and out of the house through the windows, I didn’t pay much attention the frequent visits by a pair of bulbuls. What caught my attention was a section of my chandelier holders becoming dark grey in color; right then a bulbul flew in with a twig in its mouth and went right into that grey colored holder. My son and I sat quietly and watched: first bulbul’s partner flew in and sat on another holder of the chandelier watching its mate while the nest was being built. Managed to take a few photos without disturbing the birds.

A few days have passed since that day and it looks like the nest in the chandelier cup holder has come to a ‘ready-to-move-in’ state. Bulbul to-be-parents have begun the nesting process too. One of those two birds stays in the chandelier whole night. They take turns during the day to check on their nest. Not sure if the eggs are laid yet as it is high up on the ceiling.

Funny thing is, when we go near that section and speak a few words, the bulbul pops its head out of the cup and chirps back as though it is answering our question. We are now taking extra care when we turn the lights on or television in that area.

It is indeed fun to watch these birds up-close. We wish the pair a very healthy and chirpy brood.

Nature never ceases to amaze us!!👌

Yay!! Just now, heard a faint chirping sound… Guess what… It is from the hatchling!! It was so nice to see the parent feeding the baby.

Mommy nestling with the babies…
